First Projects Floor Plans Dinette Goucho Detail More Inside The Awning

When we finally got it home we tested all the systems - and amazingly - everything actually WORKED!

During the first couple of trips the refrigerator quit, the heater quit, the water pumped leaked and the water tank leaked.  The beauty of these old systems is that they are simple in function.   The propane only refrigerator was a matter of cleaning and adjusting.  The heater is a simple gravity flow style with no fan - nice and quiet.  It was very hard to light and would not stay lit.  A new thermocouple and a good cleaning and we had excellent heat.  A new shurflo pump solved the water pump issues - we decided not to repair to old PAR pump.  The water tank actually was fine.  The problem turned out to be that a leaf roller insect had plugged up the vent and caused water to leak out around the top fitting of the tank.  Simple systems - simple solutions!  What CAN be difficult is finding information about these old systems as to how to maintain them (and you can sure spend a lot of time guessing and trying different solutions).  As I have found good information I have included it in my SOURCES

The first MAJOR project was to replace the flooring which was peeling up.  We removed most of the cabinets so we could more easily replace the flooring .  (Also the cabinets needed some rework and we thought that would be easier to do outside the trailer.)  The plywood under the flooring was perfect.  After the glue was removed it looked like new plywood!

The new floor is down - I didn't think to start taking pictures until the new floor was in.

The Cabinets
The original cabinets suffered a considerable amount of delamination of the plywood. I made the decision to try to use as many of the original cabinet parts as possible, and re-glue the panels that had limited damage . I would not do this again. I would use the old parts as patterns only and use new material. It is much easier and faster to make new than to repair old.  The original cabinetry was nothing special in terms of materials or workmanship with no attempt to match grain, figure, or color of wood.  I would describe the original cabinets as being mediocre in terms of quality.  I  replaced parts as needed including all the doors in the upper cabinets and all the materials in the gaucho unit.  The dinette is an all new design as well as its materials.  I stained all the woodwork with a stain that closely matched the original color and finished with a polyurethane varnish. All the original hardware was cleaned and re-installed with new screws.

The Electrical
We Replaced the original 3 bulb incandescent Grimes lights with new fluorescent "Thin Lites".  These are MUCH more energy efficient  and provide much more light too. The new fluorescents worked fine on battery . . . but they would not work on the original 12V AC Univolt system.  We upgraded the electrical system to a state-of-the-art Inteli Power 9100 with the charge wizard module as well.  These are great!  They keep the battery at a proper state of charge and can be left plugged in continually. New Fluorescent Lights
Two units are mounted in the ceiling and a third is flush mounted under a kitchen cabinet.  A single tube unit is mounted in the bathroom . These make a very clean installation that detract little if any from the original vintage look. See SOURCES
