What Nuvite polish to use
There is no one right answer. Every piece of aluminum is different. Different degrees of corrosion or damage. Different alloys. Different mill finishes. Some with Alcad coating and some without. Each trailer is different and even each panel of Aluminum might be different in how it corroded and/or was formed. If your trailer has a nice even patina of gray you will probably want to start with compounding and Nuvite C and follow all or most of the steps.
Different parts of our trailer has different skin and the C, G6 and F6 scratches and polishes different on different skin. Temperature and humidity make a difference as well.
Here is what I found for each grade of Nuvite. The Cyclo is ALWAYS used under the sweatshirt cotton cloth.
Compounding with G6 - removes gray patina, orange peel from stretch forming, corrosion that looks like grain, filliform corrosion and rounds out scratches and pits in the aluminum. This is a very harsh technique, which will occasionally leave some deep scratches that are difficult to polish out. Use it only when compounding with C will not remove the imperfections. You may need to compound C after you compound with G6.
Compounding with C - removes most filliform corrosion, average oxidation, and rounds out scratches and pits in the aluminum. This is my preferred grade to compound with first! The swirls are easily removed by cycloing with F7. This does not leave the deep scratches that G6 does. It takes a little longer to compound but a lot less time to polish the swirls out. Try compounding with C first. If it is not aggressive enough then you can always switch to G6. (G6 breaks down to C during the compounding process, but you will already have developed deep scratches that will later require additional compounding with C).
Cyclo with G6 - Removes corrosion that looks like grain (with a lot of work and time), With a lot of time and work it will remove the white and black left by the filliform corrosion but it still leaves some corrosion and pits. Recommended only when you do not have access to a compounder. This would be followed by cycloing with C, again, only when you do not have access to a compounder.
Cyclo with F7 - removes swirls/scratches left by compounder. (In practice, F7 seems to finish finer than C, although Nuvite rates the polishes the other way around.) You can usually move straight to the final grade S after using F7.
Cyclo with A - I experimented with following F7 with the Nuvite "A" polish (slightly more aggressive than "S"). This did take out a more swirls but I don't think that in general it is worth the time and effort unless you are a perfectionist. Moving straight to S seems to be fine. I think A may be needed (before S) if you had a nicely polished trailer that had not been polished for a couple of years.
Cyclo with S - Brings up that mirror shine with great depth.
Some experimentation is required. Everyone’s technique is a little different. Be careful when polishing near painted surfaces, decals or plastic trim. The some grades of Nuvite will remove or damage paint.
